Award winner Nathan quietly achieves goals for Aboriginal landowners

Nathan Morgan is a proud Gamilaroi man, a Senior Aboriginal Engagement Officer with the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust, and now, something we all knew - a quiet achiever.

Nathan was recognised this month for the work he does to lead and design programs that encourage Aboriginal landholders to continue their care for Country through our conservation programs.

His work, and culturally-informed practice saw him named Quiet Achiever of the Year award at the NSW Government’s Aboriginal Support Network Awards.

Nathan has been central to the development and implementation of the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust’s Aboriginal Empowerment Strategy and he said he was dedicated to getting more Aboriginal landowners involved in conservation on their lands.

“Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people can both play a role in the empowerment of First Nations people,” Nathan said.

“My goal is to ensure conservation efforts are culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, and healing-focused, all while supporting partnerships that draw on both traditional knowledge and modern practices.

“It is so rewarding to have the ability to bridge communities and conservation efforts through partnerships rooted in trust, respect, and mutual understanding.”

Nathan’s award is proof of his enthusiasm for establishing a standard for true empowerment within the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust. His aim is to create a space that supports Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in collaboration.

“By developing culturally-relevant policies, providing training, and working closely with stakeholders, we can make sure Indigenous knowledge is integrated into conservation efforts,” he said.

Nathan grew up on the lands of Gamilaroi and Euahlayi Nations, in and around Walgett, and has a strong connection to his heritage.

In his work and life Nathan draws on the strength of the emu, a totem that holds profound cultural significance for him and his family.

The emu totem

“The emu is a totem that holds profound cultural significance for me and my family. It connects me to my heritage and the lands of the Gamilaroi and Euahlayi Peoples,” Nathan said.

“It symbolises my ancestral lineage and carries the stories, wisdom, and responsibilities passed down from my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

“As a totem, the emu embodies the knowledge, resilience, and guidance of my matrilineal line. In Gamilaroi and Euahlayi culture, the emu also has an integral place in creation stories and represents continuity and connection with the land and its people.

“It really does reflect the deep bond I have with my ancestral land and it’s a reminder of my role as a guardian and custodian of our cultural heritage and community values. Through the emu, I honour my family’s legacy and reinforce my commitment to the community and environment.”
