Koala Habitat Conservation Tender in Lismore and Ballina area now closed
The NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) is calling for expressions of interest from landholders with koala habitat within the Local Government Area/s of Lismore and Ballina. The BCT is investing in these areas through a conservation tender. Through this tender, eligible landholders are given the opportunity to set their own price to protect and manage native vegetation on their land.
Bids will be ranked on a best value for money basis. Successful bidders will receive annual, ongoing payments for implementing an agreed management plan. Expressions of Interest were open from Monday 12 November till Friday 30 November 2018.

Why are we doing this?
The Tender area (see map below) contains some of the most significant koala populations in NSW. The koala population within the Lismore Tender area is estimated to have a population size of approximately 1,800 animals. This makes it one of the largest populations of the species in NSW. The Ballina Shire koala population comprises approximately 285 – 380 animals. The two areas – Lismore and Ballina – are connected through the Tuckean Nature Reserve.
Through this project, the BCT seeks to protect priority koala habitat, and to improve landscape connections for koalas by protecting and restoring sites that will facilitate koala movement and dispersal.
